| Sumario: | The main objective of this study is to analyze aspiration emergence of voiceless alveolar stop t by Brazilian EAL learners. The research-question that guides this study is: how does voiceless alveolar stop t aspiration emerges in BP-EAL interphonology? It is hypothesized that the emergence of aspiration for voiceless alveolar stop t is influenced by the high front vowel i in PB and by vowel ɪ in EAL. The theoretical background of this study is based on the theory of language as Complex Adaptive System - CAS (LARSEN-FREEMAN, 1997), in Usage-based Phonology (BYBEE, 2001) and Exemplar Theory (PIERREHUMBERT, 2001). This study has a quasi-experimental design, in which analyses involving aspiration duration are performed using beginner EAL learners seeking to analyze the influences for the emergence of aspiration in the voiceless alveolar stop t in BP-EAL interphonology. Results indicated longer t aspiration emergence followed by BP and EAL high vowels. Additionally, longer EAL t aspiration was reported in comparison to BP aspiration patterns. Finally, informants"™ sex did not significantly influence the phenomenon. It was concluded the phonetic detail associated to EAL t realization was acquired, unexpectedly, by the beginner level subjects in this study. |
