| Sumario: | The setter has become a key player in high performance teams and his performance is directly related to the team’s performance. We found in the literature studies regarding the characteristics of the lifter, the setteing zone, the technique used, the declared high studies. However, no study was found that relates the setter’s participation in the defense and the offensive organization of the team. Thus, the general objective of this study is to verify the setter’s participation in the defensive complex and the offensive organization in national teams. 110 games and 2282 defense actions of the 2018 Men’s and Women’s World Volleyball Championship were analyzed. For editing and tactical analysis of images in public domain video format, DATA VOLLEY software and a coded Excel spreadsheet were used. The variables analyzed were: Defense Zone, Defense Effectiveness, Who setter, setter Zone, Attack Zone, Who setter, Attack Time, Attack Technique and the complex’s outcome (point for, point against or continuity). These data were submitted to a descriptive analysis. To analyze the outcome of the rally from a setter’s defense action, the multinomial logistic regression test was applied. All statistical calculations were performed using SPSS software version 25.0 and the level of significance adopted was p <0.05. Results found were 1107 rallies for men and 1175 rallies for women, but only 63% of rallies progressed to an offensive organization. On the one hand, the statistical test showed that the defense zone explains the point in favor only in the male teams. In order to have a certain advantage, when the lifter defends in zone 1. On the other hand, the technical variable of attack pointed out to be decisive for the point in favor for both male and female selection. With that, there seems to be more advantages for teams that perform a powerful attack. In addition, the other variables were not significant to explain the point in favor. Based on the study carried out, it is concluded that the lifter’s defense in defense zone 1 is more associated with the success of the rally in the men’s teams and that the powerful attack technique is associated with the success of the rally in both teams. There was an inconsistency in the data of multinomial analysis for the variables of defense and point attack and effectiveness of defense and continued attack in men. For the female, an inconsistency found was in the variable attack time 1 point and in the continuous attack time 1. We propose future studies that increase the number of rallies, game actions from other championships, including, to reduce inconsistency and enable this type of multinomial analysis. |
