Descripción
Sumario:It was the year 1640 when, motivated by the possibility of perfection in the married state, the Portuguese author, Diogo Paiva de Andrada, belonging to a renewed humanist tradition engaged in the production of warnings and guides, wrote a manual in which he prescribed a series of conducts which, according to his understanding, pro- fi led the Perfect Marriage. Th e purpose of this article is to investigate these counseling mentors of exemplary union between husbands and wives. From the notion of modern or post-Tridentine marriage, we intend to investigate, more specifi cally, the recommenda- tions that advocate the so-called conjugal love, marital feeling that warns of excesses and disordered passions, as well as the female role in the performance of the ideal consortium.
