| Sumario: | Audio-description-AD, translation of images into words, turns (adio)visual products accessible to the visually-impaired via a script and a narration/locution. Early professionals thought neutrality in both was possible. To address this issue with in-training audio-describers, we designed a proposal for assessing scripts that would demonstrate the presence and type of evaluation and the implications to training. This proposal is based on the Appraisal System-AS, within Hallidayan Systemic-Functional Linguistics. The AS encompasses three evaluative meaning areas that reveal how audiodescribers evaluate. This article’s purpose is to share the results of a pilot application of the proposal by analysing scripts of a film, a play, and a painting. The proposal proved effective so as to informing the training, pointing out: the types of evaluations to be emphasized depending on aspects of the visual text to be prioritized in descriptions; the need to avoid descriptive categorical deviations and inferences and how to do so. |
