Descripción
Sumario:This paper investigates attitudes about Turkish-German codemixing. The data presented is part of a study consisting of an online survey that collected demographic information on the participants and their reactions to short film clips. Clips in which characters speak German, Turkish, or a mixture of the two were chosen from two films by the Turkish-German director, Fatih Akin. The survey was available in German, Turkish, and English. This paper discusses open-ended responses to the survey with a concentration on evaluative comments regarding language use. The survey was administered to 20 native German speakers, 26 native Turkish speakers, and 12 native Turkish-German bilinguals. This paper expands upon themes in the responses with detailed content analysis. The results illuminate the connections that exist between the use of code-mixing and social characteristics in the minds of the participants. Results indicate that bilingual Turkish-German speakers as well as Germanspeakers and Turkish-speakers evaluate mixing negatively.
