Sumario:Purpose: To check the knowledge of diabetes on weight loss through exercise and identify the key factors that contribute to the development of diabetes mellitus type II in members of a group for the elderly in Pinhais – PR. Materials and Methods: The questionnaire, this search tool, is closed to those questions to the attention of diabetics on weight loss through exercise and the main factors for the development of diabetes mellitus type II. Anthropometric measurements were performed to examine the body mass index (BMI). Results: (71.4%) among the 28 individuals of the sample believe that physical exercise combined with balanced nutrition is the correct alternative to lose weight and health. When asked about the main cause of overweight and obesity in actuality, the subjects of the study sample, suggested more significantly overstated the sedentary and food as the main reason and (85,7%) cites that obesity is a major factor for a person becoming diabetic type II. Conclusion: the presence of obesity and overweight in most of the sample, however, they face the questioning towards research, showed satisfactory knowledge of the importance of physical exercise and citing the inactivity and consequent obesity as a strong influential to develop diabetes mellitus type II.
