From three general perspectives, it examines the theoretical turmoil and epistemic privilege that underpins the most common characterization of esports used by the academic community. It argues that epistemic models originating from the Global North, based on local stories of professional movements and the evolution of a small group in hegemonic spaces, are insufficient to make sense of the diversity of practices and gaming situations in esports. Ultimately, it proposes a definition that is epistemically fairer to the South.Este artículo aborda cuestiones relacionadas con el concepto y las historias de los esports, más específicamente cómo se abordan las actividades deportivas en los videojuegos. Desde tres perspectivas generales, se discute el tumulto teórico y el privilegio epistémico que sustentan la caracterización más común de los esports utilizada por la comunidad académica. Se argumenta que los modelos epistémicos del Norte Global, basados en historias locales de movimientos profesionales y en la evolución de un pequeño grupo en espacios hegemónicos, son insuficientes para dar sentido a la diversidad de prácticas y situaciones de juego en los esports. Al final, se propone una definición que seja epistémicamente más justa para el Sur.Este artigo debate questões relacionadas ao conceito e às histórias dos esports, mais especificamente sobre como são abordadas as atividades esportivas em videogames. A partir de três perspectivas gerais, discute-se o tumulto teórico e o privilégio epistêmico que sustenta a caracterização mais comum dos esports usada pela comunidade acadêmica. Argumenta-se que os modelos epistêmicos oriundos do Norte Global, baseados em histórias locais de movimentos profissionais e na evolução de um pequeno grupo em espaços hegemônicos, são insuficientes para dar sentido à diversidade das práticas e situações de jogos nos esports.
